This is the Latest Thing On The Internets. It’s the Boxing Day movie to yesterday’s Christmas Day insanity. April Fools’ day on the internet is a thing to behold, truly. It’s something to do with the fresh ability to trick people on a huge scale. Just as virus-writing and spam email gave new life to defrauding and confidence tricks.

Anyway, the gist of the movie is this - a chap records his girlfriend playing Team Fortress 2 for the first time, cutting it together to show the most interesting/amusing bits and pops it up for all to see. It’s pretty good, definitely worth a few grins and even the occasional ‘aww’. Despite the YouTube comment thread - which anyone with a weak heart or short temper should firmly stay away from, as always - the interesting thing about the video isn’t the fact that it’s LOL A GIRL, but that the gamer in question isn’t a gamer at all.

The most interesting thing is the most obvious - that she talks at all. I find this really common in people who don’t game a lot, and I think it comes from the unease of being watched by the (presumably) gamier person that’s assisting them in playing. Not gamier as in taste, obviously. Unless sitting down in the evening hooking yourself up to the internet matures your flesh in some way I’m unaware of.

Anyway, definitely worth a watch, as these things always are. There’s a great bit right at the start where someone drops dead after switching teams, which shocks her. It’s easy to take the piss out of, but I think the reason it makes a lot of us smile is because we remember the complete bewilderment at first playing these games, too.
